How the world economies, thoughts, and cultures are merging, so are our dressing patterns. Indo-western clothing has become a significant style in our day-to-day clothing. As the name spells, it is a mix of both western and south Asian clothing.

Though it has its roots in the late 19th century. As far as I remember, from 2019, we could witness a sudden bloom in the wide variety of indo-western outfits. Celebs have been a part of the endorsement of this mix-match trend.

Moreover, I feel Indo-western bloomed due to the increasing inclination towards comfort. People who had trouble carrying the saree added shoes instead of juttis or traditional Indian footwear. While some swapped shawls with jackets. And, Kurtis or salwar with jeans has become like a usual affair.

Though I have to admit that I don’t actually like a few indo-western outfits when it gets too blingy and weird.

What I wore for the indo-western themed event at my College?

A few days back, we were having a cultural week at our college, MCC. It is a three days fest for Carmelites wherein each day has a different theme. This year our themes were –

Day one – Renaissance

Day two – Dolce and Desi

Day three – Popstar Party

I couldn’t attend all the days but had to go for the second day flaunting my dolce and desi costume.

I swear I curated this outfit just 20 minutes before I had to leave for college.

Outfit details

You know I didn’t want to be too basic and wanted a little drama in my outfit.

I wore a pair of white trousers with a white turtle neck top that had full sleeves. So, the Western part was over, and to add the Indian touch, I grabbed a royal blue colored long shrug kinda flared Kurti. The flared over-jacket has the prints of Indian tye-dye.

And, the truth is this flared Kurti was custom-made with my mom’s saree. So, you see memories and love attached to the dress makes it more precious.

To finish the look, right when I was jumping into the shoes, my eyes found these blue hand-crafted jutti. So, as usual, loved the way it matched with my outfit.

And I got late to the event as I had this one statement necklace triggering me whether to wear it or not? I finally decided to take along with me and wear it for a photo or so.

Indo-western outfit ideas

So, after going to college, I felt there are quite a lot of outfits that go with the Indo-western theme. I can say proudly that everyone did justice to the theme of dolce and desi. But, had to admit a few of the outfits were a little weird for my taste though.

So, I am here to give you a quick run on different ways of dressing indo-western:

  • Saree and Denim Jacket
  • Jeans and shrug with Indian motives
  • shoes and saree with a crop top
  • Shirt and skirts or palazzos
  • Embroidered jackets
  • Trousers with Indian prints and solid shirt or vice-versa
  • Belts with Indian salwar or sarees
  • Angrakha Kurti short or long with saree. This may sound weird but I saw one girl wearing this and I loved the way it looked.
  • Printed peplum tops with palazzos or flared pants
  • Saree or long dupatta draped with a pair of jeans or trousers

Okay, the key here in dressing indo-western is adding statement pieces of jewelry be it in the form of a necklace or earrings or bangles.

And, if your dress is too Indian then go for shoes, and if you think it’s too western go for Indian jutti or mojaris.

Accessorizing can change the look of your outfit in a true sense and you will notice the change. And, try to keep at least one element of your outfit as Indian or western otherwise the whole play of indo-western will lose its charm.
